About Our Organization

On the 23rd of May in 1976 Ben Ziri Caravan #218 became a reality and has grown into one of the busiest Caravans of the International Order of Alhambra.

The Caravan focuses its attention on providing assistance to persons developmentally disabled by mental retardation, through charitable endeavors and projects. (see some of our Recent Events)

Raising funds has provided the means with which to accomplish charitable work. This is obtained by monthly socials at which member teams volunteer their services, time, and product to the affair. A small fee is required to attend. Another fund raiser is the annual "huge yard sale" held in early May, Through a concerted effort of the Sir Nobles and Sultanas a tidy sum is realized ....

The Ben Ziri Memorial Scholarship Award memorializes its late Sir Nobles and Sultanas by contributing $ 500.00 to the Special Education Department of San Diego State University (SDSU) in their name. To date $ 8,500.00 has been awarded for students working toward a California Special Education Teachers Credential.

With respect to recognition of significant places in Catholic History, the Caravan was instrumental in placing a bronze plaque at Mission San Luis Rey, Oceanside, California; two at Basilica Mission de Alcala, San Diego, California and a plaque at Mission San Antonio de Pala, Pala Indian Reservation, California.
